Trailer for the VBS.tv movie: “Heavy Metal in Baghdad”.

Synopsis:

Heavy Metal in Baghdad is a feature film documentary that follows the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda from the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003 to the present day. Playing heavy metal in a Muslim country has always been a difficult (if not impossible) proposition but after Saddam’s regime was toppled, there was a brief moment for the band in which real freedom seemed possible. That hope was quickly dashed as their country fell into a bloody insurgency. From 2003-2006, Iraq disintegrated around them while Acrassicauda struggled to stay together and stay alive, always refusing to let their heavy metal dreams die. Their story echoes the unspoken hopes of an entire generation of young Iraqis.

I just watched this last night, and was moved by the story behind the only Heavy Metal band in Baghdad. Inspirational, and at the same time, heart-breaking.. It really sucks to see these young people being dealt such a shitty hand in life, yet it’s awesome to see their effort to fight through the destruction that is a part of their everyday lives, as they strive to feed their passion for playing Heavy Metal music.

Suroosh Avli (for Vice): “How did you guys decide to start a Metal band”

Faisal (singer for Acrassicauda): “If you really want to know what the attraction is, look around. We are living in a Heavy Metal world.

I don’t like Polo button ups. There is no front pocket, so there’s nowhere to put the customer ticket.

I harbor similar feelings about short sleeved button ups.

Randomly came across this song today. Blast from the past.

According to the ever-wise internet, this song came out in 1996 (when I was 13!!!). Still good as it ever was. I remember always associating this song with this imaginary scenario: I’m at the most chill party EVER (well, as “chill” as parties get in 13 year old boys’ minds) and the girl of my dreams walks down the stairs wrapped in a glowing blue aura, while “6 Underground” plays in the background.

How embarrassing.
